In order for a study to provide compelling evidence of program effectiveness, the intervention and comparison groups should be equivalent on key characteristics measured at baseline. This brief discusses why baseline equivalence is important and how it can be assessed. The brief also provides guidance on matching methods that can improve baseline equivalence to show the effect of teen pregnancy prevention interventions.
