Responding to a client’s disclosure of intimate partner violence is often an emotionally trying situation for health care providers; secondary and vicarious trauma are well documented in the literature. This session in April 2022 offered family planning staff (including project directors, project managers, and providers) tools and techniques to help providers cope when working with clients experiencing trauma and violence. The presentation also shared self-care strategies for providers to use when responding to these situations.

Speaker(s):

  • Rebecca Levenson, MA, Senior Health Policy Consultant for FUTURES Without Violence; former Planned Parenthood clinic director; and nationally recognized researcher, educator, advocate, and speaker.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe organizational and self-care strategies for sexual and reproductive health providers to promote trauma-informed practices
  2. Develop and/or strengthen workplace policies to support providers experiencing trauma
  3. Implement three ways to support providers and reduce burnout
